LPD Warns of Phone Scams

The calls have been received primarily by the elderly, with the caller indicating that the intended victim has won some type of prize or monetary award.

The Lima Police Department is warning residents of continued attempts by persons to commit thefts via the means of telephone scams.

The calls have been received primarily by the elderly, with the caller indicating that the intended victim has won some type of prize or monetary award.

The perpetrator of the scam then tells the victim that in order to receive the prize- a cash or credit card “fee” is required in advance.

Police say to be wary of any unsolicited offer, and aware that anything that sounds “too good to be true” generally is.

Ask anyone making phone solicitations for donations to send you literature by mail before making any donation by phone.

You should contact your local law enforcement or Better Business Bureau if you receive questionable phone contacts.
