Ohio schools vote down competitive balance bylaw

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — For the second consecutive year, Ohio high schools have voted down a proposal that would have addressed the ongoing competitive balance problems between public and private teams. A bylaw that would have changed how schools are assigned to tournament divisions was voted down 339-301.

Rather than place schools into tournament divisions strictly on their enrollment, the proposed bylaw would have used several factors, including a controversial one based on a school's success in that sport.

OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross said it is expected that a petition drive will produce a referendum next year that would separate tournaments in terms of public and non-public schools.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Reds 6, Mets 3. (Cincinnati now 19-17, -2.5 St. Louis in N.L. Central)

NEW YORK (AP) — Todd Frazier homered twice and Cincinnati beat New York.

Pinch-hitter Jay Bruce drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly one out after the Reds put together three straight hits off John Rauch (3-2), ending with Brandon Phillips' single. Rauch retired Chris Heisey on a popup before left-hander Tim Byrdak came on to face the lefty-hitting Bruce. After that, D.J. Carrasco came on and gave up Frazier's second homer.

Jose Arredondo (3-1) pitched a perfect seventh inning of relief for the Reds. Aroldis Chapman and Sean Marshall finished off the win for Cincinnati. In total the bullpen threw three innings of one hit shutout relief. Starter Mike Leake struck out a season-high five in six innings, allowing only one earned run in his best start of the season.

Cincinnati (Mat Latos 2-2, 4.54 ERA) at N.Y. Mets (R.A. Dickey 5-1, 3.65 ERA), 1:10 p.m.

Indians 9, Mariners 3 (Cleveland now 21-16, +3 Detroit atop A.L. Central)

CLEVELAND (AP) — Ubaldo Jimenez overcame a shaky start to get the win and the Cleveland Indians pounded out a season-best five doubles to beat the Seattle Mariners 9-3 Wednesday night.

Jimenez (4-3) gave up five hits and three runs over six innings. He threw 107 pitches — 27 in a long first inning — walked two and struck out four.

Seattle starter Felix Hernandez (3-3) gave up 10 hits and six earned runs in only 3 2-3 innings. He and Jimenez combined for a 34-minute, 59-pitch first inning that ended with Cleveland ahead 4-1.

Travis Hafner hit his fifth homer and drove in three runs, while Shin-Soo Choo had three hits for Cleveland, which has won three straight.

Seattle (Hector Noesi 2-4, 6.32 ERA) at Cleveland (Zach McAllister 1-1, 4.15 ERA), 12:05 p.m.

Twins 11, Tigers 7.

DETROIT (AP) — Jamey Carroll hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to give Minnesota the lead, and the Twins outlasted the sloppy Detroit Tigers 11-7 on Wednesday night. Detroit made four errors in the first three innings.

The Tigers still led 7-6 when Carroll came up with men on first and second in the sixth. His double off Duane Below (2-1) scored both runners. Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe homered for the Twins.

Minnesota (P.J. Walters 0-1, 3.00 ERA) at Detroit (Doug Fister 0-1, 0.54 ERA), 1:05 p.m.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

Eastern Conference Finals

Devils 3, Rangers 2. Series tied 1-1.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Rangers coach John Tortorella was not happy with his team following a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, which evened the series at two games apiece. He was asked six questions during the postgame news conference and spent less than 14 seconds answering them. His quick meeting with the press came after he benched his top scorer, Marion Gaborik for part of the third period.

David Clarkson's tip-in at 2:31 of the final period was the difference as the Devils grabbed home-ice advantage from the Blueshirts. Second-period goals by Marc Staal and Chris Kreider put the Rangers up 2-1 before Ryan Carter knotted the score with 1:51 left in the period. Clarkson won it with his third goal of the postseason.

Martin Brodeur was outstanding following Clarkson's game-winner, making eight of his 23 saves in the final period.

New Jersey will host Game 3 on Saturday afternoon.

Tonight:

Western Conference Finals

Phoenix at Los Angeles (2-0), 9 p.m.

Browns DT Phil Taylor has surgery on torn muscle

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor has undergone surgery to repair a torn chest muscle he injured while lifting weights.

Taylor tore his left pectoral muscle while bench pressing during the offseason conditioning program last week at the team's facility. A Browns spokesman said the surgery "went well" and the 335-pound Taylor is resting comfortably at the Cleveland Clinic.

The team did not provide a timetable for Taylor's return. Last week, Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Taylor would need "months, not weeks" to recover but would not rule him out for this season.

Injuries such as Taylor's typically take up to six months to heal. Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson missed most of two seasons with torn pectoral muscles.

If Taylor is sidelined, rookie defensive tackles John Hughes and Billy Winn could get significant playing time.
