I had the opportunity to work at Limaland Motorsports Park this past Friday night as I assisted Mike Miller with the track announcing.
I was tasked with talking with the winning drivers on the track following the feature races for the Stocks, Modifieds and Sprints.
Each winner had a notable achievement to discuss with me.
In the Stocks, Lima's Jeff Koz defended his title in the Keysor Memorial. It was also his second straight win at Limaland.
The Modified winner was Matt Westfall. It was his first ever win at Limaland. He held off the three-time defending Track Champion Todd Sherman to take the checkered flag.
And in the Sprint feature, Jared Horstman followed up his first ever win at Limaland last week with another win. He passed ace Randy Hannagan on the high side with about 5 laps to go and hung on to take the chekers.
The racing was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I don't get out to Limaland that often because of various commitments during the late spring and summer (mainly the Lima Locos P.A. duties) and that's a shame.
I always have a great experience when I go to the races, whether I'm working for the track or just spectating as I did last year at the Brad Doty Classic.
There are very few sporting events that are as fan friendly and well done as Limaland.
You can carry in your own refresments, but if you don't you'll have access to high quality concessions offerings. The food is very good and there's a wide array of choices.
Maybe most importantly, the pace of the action is very brisk. I'm not talking about the actual racing, I'm talking about the time between races and also the managing of cautions and wrecks during the races.
At Limaland you won't find yourself sitting there wondering what the hell the hold up is. They move through the heat races and on to the features in very good time.
The heat races begin at 7:30 and last Friday the last race, the Sprint Car feature, ended at 10:00. That included nine heat races, the Dash for Cash and three features.
If you're going for the first time make sure you bring goggles to shield your eyes from the dust and dirt that the cars kick up. But don't fall for the old stereotype about leaving the track covered in dirt. You most certainly will get some on you but the amount depends on your seat location and it's really not that big a deal. Don't let that be a deterrent.
Oh yeah bring some earplugs too. That stereotype is true. The cars are pretty loud and it's wise to protect your hearing.
Even if you're not a "racing fan" I think you will appreciate the action at Limaland and if you go once, I predict you'll go back.
